CMU Successfully held the First Meeting of the Second Council of BRIMEA and the 5th International Forum on Higher Medical Education cum the 40th Anniversary Celebration of Institute for International Health Professions Education and Research

On June 19, 2021, the First Meeting of the Second Council of the “Belt and Road” International Medical Education Alliance (BRIMEA) and the 5th International Forum on Higher Medical Education which was also the 40th  Anniversary of Institute for International Health Professions Education and Research of China Medical University was held successfully.  

 

 

 

 

Professor Gong Fuqing, Secretary of the Party Committee of China Medical University, attended the opening ceremony of the 5th International Forum on Higher Medical Education and delivered a speech. He emphasized that with the strong support of BRIMEA, the successful organization of the 5th International Forum on Higher Medical Education allowed the professionals and scholars to broaden their horizons, enrich their knowledge, strengthen friendship and find common interest from exchanging and sharing of the most cutting-edge academic achievements. This year marks the 40th anniversary of the Institute for International Health Professions Education and Research of China Medical University. Over several generations of unremitting efforts, IIPHER has developed into an influential, internationally well-known and academically advanced medical education and research institution. In the aim of “building a world-class medical education and research institution in China”, Professor Gong hopes that the Institute will further utilize its advantages, fully mobilize resources, and continue to play a leading role in the reform and research of medical education, thus contributing to the reform and development of education and teaching, as well as the cause of medical education in both China and the world!

 

On the First Meeting of the Second Council of BRIMEA, Professor Wen Deliang, representative of President Institution of BRIMEA and President of China Medical University, reported to the council on the work summary of the first council and work plan for the second council.


 Professor Wen Deliang also delivered an opening speech at the 5th International Forum on Higher Medical Education. He mentioned that the 5th International Forum on Higher Medical Education was a rich academic feast, which strengthened our friendship and motivated us to move forward together in the expectations of a community of shared interests, responsibilities and future. Today, the 5th International Forum on Higher Medical Education has experienced five consecutive years and the Institute for International Health Professions Education and Research of China Medical University has endured 40 years, both of which are standing at a new historical starting point. Looking forward, we shall join hands, share a common future, support each other, enhance friendship, and deepen exchanges and cooperation so as to make new and greater contributions to the reform and high-quality development of international higher medical education.

 

Professor Wen Deliang also made a keynote speech entitled “Innovative Development of Global Medical Education in the Post-Pandemic Era”.

 

 

The opening ceremony of the First Meeting of the Second Council of BRIMEA and the 5th  International Forum on Higher Medical Education was chaired by Professor Liu Ying, Secretary General of BRIMEA and Vice President of China Medical University.


 

 

A total of 61 member institutions out of 71 members attended the event. During the council meeting, all participants watched a documentary of the past 3 years development of BRIMEA. Professor Wu Xu, Director of International Affairs of China Medical University introduced the revision of the Alliance charter and the renewal of the council board members on behalf of the secretariat.

 

 

 

The council meeting was followed by the 5th International Forum on Higher Medical Education which was also the 40th  anniversary of the Institute for International Health Professions Education and Research of China Medical University.


 

 

On the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the Institute for International Health Professions Education and Research of China Medical University, Professor Wang Weimin, Executive Deputy Director of NCHPED, Chairman of Committee of National Center for Health Professions Education Development and Deputy Director of the Peking University Medical Department; Professor David A. Hirsh, Vice Dean of Harvard Medical School Undergraduate Medical Education; and Professor William W. Pinsky, President and Chief Executive Officer ECFMG presented in the video and gave their congratulations. They not only recognized the construction and development achievements of the Institute, but also expressed their best wishes.

 

Centered on the theme of “Adhere to the Innovation-Driven Medical Development Strategy, Jointly Discuss High-Quality Development of Medical Education”, 240 medical education experts and scholars from 67 medical education institutions in 18 countries participated in this forum online and offline. Professor Wang Weimin, Executive Deputy Director of NCHPED, Chairman of Committee of National Center for Health Professions Education Development and Deputy Director of the Peking University Medical Department; Professor David A. Hirsh, Vice Dean of Harvard Medical School Undergraduate Medical Education; Professor Khalid Masood Gondal, President of King Edward Medical University; Professor Sina Ercan, Dean of Yeditepe University Turkey Medical College; Professor Wu Xiaochuang, Vice President of XiangYa School of Medicine; Professor Sun Baozhi, former Vice President of China Medical University; Doctor William P. Burdick, Deputy Secretary General of TUFH; Professor Dianne Manning, former Assistance to President of University of Pretoria; Doctor Zhumagulova Alina Bakytzhanovna, Director General of IAAR; Professor Shu Xiaogang, Vice Director of Tongji Medical College of HUST; Academician Carmencita Padilla, President of University of the Philippines Manila; Professor Ding Qiang, Vice President of Nanjing Medical University; Professor Coralia Cotoraci, President of Vasile Goldis Western University of Arad Romania; Doctor Aidaraliev Arsen Asylbekovish, President of International University of Kyrgyzstan; and Professor Wen Deliang, President of China Medical University all addressed keynote speeches in the Council. During the online live broadcast, this forum attracted more than 43,000 teachers, medical staff and administrators.

 

 

 

 

Professor Wang Weimin, Executive Deputy Director of NCHPED, Chairman of Committee of National Center for Health Professions Education Development and Deputy Director of the Peking University Medical Department, made a keynote speech titled Chinas Medical Education in the Background of New Medical Science.

Professor David A. Hirsh, Vice Dean of Harvard Medical School Undergraduate Medical Education, made a keynote speech titled "Havard Medical School's Longitudinal Integrated Clerkiship: A Way Forward for Medical Education".  


 

Professor Khalid Masood Gondal, President of King Edward Medical University, made a keynote speech titled "Cultivate Multi-Level Talents with Collaborative Development of Medicine and Education". 

 


Professor Sina Ercan, Dean of Yeditepe University Turkey Medical College, made a keynote speech titled "Closing Gaps and Overcoming Limitations in Undergraduate Medical Education Through Hospital Affiliations". 

 


Professor Wu Xiaochuang, Vice President of Xiang Ya School of Medicine, made a keynote speech titled "Internationalization of Xiang Ya School of Medicine Education—Inheritance, Innovation & Development".  

 

        

Professor Sun Baozhi, former Vice President of China Medical University, made a keynote speech titled "WFME Global Standards for Curriculum Construction and Current Trends and Enlightenments".  

 

 


 

 Doctor William P. Burdick, Deputy Secretary General of TUFH, made a keynote speech titled "Accrediting Technology Supported Education".


Professor Dianne Manning, former Assistance to President of University of Pretoria, made a keynote speech titled "Ensuring Quality: Intersection of Accreditation and Certification in South Afirca". 

 

 

Doctor Zhumagulova Alina Bakytzhanovna, Director General of IAAR, made a keynote speech titled "International Accreditation Mechanism to Improve teh Quality of Medical Education".  



 Professor Shu Xiaogang, Vice Direcotr of Tongji Medical College of HUST, made a keynote speech titled "5G and AI Enabled Wisdom Medical".

 

 


 

Academician Carmencita Padilla, President of University of the Philippines Manila, made a keynote speech titled "The Innovation-Driven Development in the Midst of the Pandemic".  

 



Professor Ding Qiang, Vice President of Nanjing Medical University, made a keynote speech titled "Medical Education Concept and Reform Practice".



 

 Professor Coralia Cotoraci, President of Vasile Goldis Western University of Arad, Romania, made a keynote speech titled "Online Medical Education and the Application of New Technologies During the COVID-19 Pandemic".

 

 

 Doctor Aidaraliev Arsen Asylbekovish, President of International University of Kyrgyzstan, made a keynote speech titled “Emerging Role of Academic Medicine in Kyrgyzstan”.


Since its foundation, the Alliance has been actively implementing the principle of discussing, sharing, and building together”. Meanwhile, by adhering to the stance of “open cooperation, harmony and inclusiveness, mutual benefit and win-win”, various high-level and in-depth humanistic exchanges on medical education are organized within the Alliance framework. Based on practicing the purpose of the Alliance and implementing innovative development, all member units have achieved gratifying progress and remarkable results in the past three years, which positively promoted the common mission of focusing on medical education and building a community of health with a shared future. From 2020-2021, with the joining of new Alliance members such as Dalian Medical University, Medical College of Dalian University, Henan Medical School, Karaganda State University, Jinzhou Medical University, Liaoning University Of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Khyber Medical University, Shenyang Medical College, Bukhara State Medical Institute, Uzbekistan and Fergana School of Public Health, Uzbekistan the governing units of the Alliance has been expanded from 61 to 71, and the number of member units is increasing constantly. The mutual exchange, joint development and win-win among these members have together realized the sustainable development of the Alliance.


The successful holding of this council and forum will further accelerate the interaction among the Alliance members, deepen their mutual exchanges and cooperation, and contribute to facilitating the development of international medical education.
